This comment is on the subject of rational mysticism.

I was at lunch today with a member of the UU Humanists, and we were discussing areas where humanists and mystics might find common interest.

He reminded me that the final chapter of Sam Harris' book, "The End of Faith" is about meditation and mysticism. Harris' book is a strong critique of many of the traditional forms of organized religion. His concluding chapter notes the volume of empirical feedback about the benefits of contemplative practice, and the demonstrated history that mystical pursuits and spiritual inquiry have been important dimensions of human experience and meaning.

I located the link below which is an online article that Harris contributed as a follow-up to critical reaction towards his book. This article is title "Rational Mysticism" and restates some of the perspectives he shares in his book.

Harris is evidently a long time meditator. He has other sources and information about meditation at his web site www.samharris.org.

It is my experience that the more I tune into my mystical self, the more rational and effective I am in the world of "normal" activity. I'm glad this site is up and hope some lively discussion happens.

Thanks for your comment, Jean. I'm looking forward to more discussion here, too. And on goodreads, where there is a "UU Mystics in Community" group (join goodreads for free, then you can join the group).

I am interested in forming a study group at my UU Congregation for the book, A Course in Miracles. Any one out there know if this has been done?
